Vehicle-lifters' gang busted

An inter-state gang of vehicle-lifters was busted by police after a brief encounter on the outskirts of village Kheri-Sadh.

ROHTAK: An inter-state gang of vehicle-lifters was busted by police here late on Monday night after a brief encounter on the outskirts of village Kheri-Sadh.
Four members of the gang were arrested and one of them managed to escape. No one was injured in the exchange of fire between police and the criminals that followed a raid at the hideout of the accused situated in the fields of the village about 10 kilometre from here.

Three vehicles allegedly stolen by the gang were recovered from the spot.
Police authorities claimed on Tuesday that the gang had been planning to loot a petrol pump situated near the hideout. SP Hanif Qureshi told mediapersons at a press conference held in his office that acting on a tip-off, a police party of the special force led by Inspector Mahavir raided an isolated room in the fields on Monday night. The gangsters were planning a robbery and the target was a petrol pump in the vicinity. Upon being besieged and asked to surrender, the criminals started firing at the police.
The police returned fire and consequently succeeded in nabbing four of the five members of the gang. According to Qureshi, the criminals were later identified as Satish and Manoj, both residents of village Jasia in the district, Surinder alias Raju of Jeli in Uttaranchal and Dhiraj, a resident of Balandpur in Uttar Pradesh. Dharambir, resident of Jasia, managed to flee under cover of darkness.
According to the SP, a Tata Safari and two Indica cars, one pistol and two knives were seized from the four persons arrested. A case under sections 399, 402, 307, 353 and 411 of IPC and sections 25, 54 and 59 of Arms Act has been registered against the five in Sampla police station. Those arrested were produced in a local court on Tuesday afternoon.
Qureshi claimed that during the interrogation, the accused confessed their involvement in at least 26 cases of vehicle theft, including lifting of luxury cars from different places in Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. He said raids were being conducted at various places on the basis of information provided by the accused to nab other members of the gang.
